CJ steering
« on: June 13, 2021, 10:52:18 AM »
All,

Looking to replace/upgrade the leaking steering box, pump, and lines on our '78 CJ. Reading through different forums on options and find a lot of conflicting information about different years; NPT vs SAE fittings for the lines, H1 boxes, etc...

If you've been through this before or have any advice or thoughts please let me know.

Will depend on what year model pump you get

They went from flared fittings to metric o-rings in '80

May want to get the pump first before you order lines, or take it to a hydraulic shop and have them made

I bought all my stuff from NAPA. Nothing wrong with the stock box and pump. The 2 things you need most are the MORE steering box bracket and a Borgeson Steering shaft.

I will most likely stick with stock so I don't run into any compatibility issues. One problem I have with the pump is that it was sitting a little askew in its bracket and the pully wasn't lined up with the others. ORI spaced it out so everything is in line but there isn't as much thread engagement on the steering pump studs as I would like so that's another issue I need to tackle.

I have the MORE box bracket and will look into the steering shaft.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
