Potts Mountain Trail Ride - October 28, 2023: Friday - Sunday Trip

Added to Calendar: 10-28-23, 10-29-23

To Hiam's post, I plan on doing a full technical writeup of the trail with mapping, waypoints of obstacles etc.
I figure I pushed so hard for the Trail Reports section I need to do my best to contribute more than the few I have so far. I may even setup a placeholder if The Boss says I can ;)

For Group 1, we will meet around 7:30 at the Pines Campground (since most of us will be staying there anyway), air down, conduct our driver’s meeting, and address any issues, concerns, and questions. We will plan to roll out by 8AM and head to the Potts Mountain Jeep Trail Lower Trailhead. According to Google Maps, this is about a 3-mile trek from the campground to the trailhead. I believe this is the direction (North to South) that we head for the uphill path. I think that is how most folks want to go, climbing versus descending the trail. I’m not sure how long it will take us to complete. Still, I want to ensure that we aren’t rushed, we have plenty of time to play on any obstacles that anyone wants to try out, and we build in time for recovery efforts or assistance that anyone may need. I believe there is a meadow along the trail where we can stop for lunch. I hope the timing works out okay for that, but we’ll make it work. I want to reiterate I have never been to Potts Mountain before, so this trail will be new for me. If you haven’t been here either, this is a blind leading the blind event, and we will all grow from the experience! Please jump in if you have been there, and I got something wrong. I have no ego.

Also, you can call me a wimp if you want, but I froze my butt off at the Fall Run at the Oak Ridge Estates, and the nighttime temperature was around 55°. If you are planning to camp, this trip is at the end of October, and I expect it to be quite a bit cooler at night. Plan appropriately. A few of us plan to bring firewood, but in your tent or vehicle or wherever you plan to sleep, have a plan so you don’t freeze to death. That would definitely put a damper on the trip.

I likely will be up for convoy, but if I have pop-up, then 75 mph is about it for me.
I would say that's my maximum preferred speed both ways, so agreed. I've updated the original thread with convoy members for early Friday to head to the Pines Campground. Who else?

Wish I could make it y’all, but work is not cooperating. Just a few snapshots of the trail map and some obstacles. Lucas, meadow up top is huge and perfect for lunch. Enjoy!

Studying the terrain it looks like The Ledge obstacle is optional, you see it as a popular feature in Potts Mountain YouTube videos. Prior to it is a split in the main road, to tackle that challenge, we'll need to split left, the rest head right. Signs are posted too so we'll be fine. The Stacks obstacle is a one way route (appropriate line looks like it's to the left of the stack). Keep in mind, I do expect we'll all be spotting each other through but for those of you that want visuals at each obstacle, download the 'TrailsOffroad' app; you can see optional, and non-optional obstacles visually with descriptions, and mud holes according to the map. I am a visual person so it helps me...

Thanks Josh! I used your map as an attachment for the original thread along with a schedule. @The_Rock keep me honest if you want to add/change events.

Hiam, looks good to me. I am down to convoy but as a heads up, I’m trailering the Jeep down. The little TJ just doesn’t afford me the room to pack the camping gear, tools, wood, etc. So I’m totally kidding about folks being able to keep up with me!

To go uphill on the trail, use the entrance that's on the right side of the map fyi

I feel pretty good about going from campground to trailhead. I think I have been 3 or 4 times, so I am sure will all come back once we get there.

Isn't the normal route downhill? I dont know that I have ever gone uphill.

If you are meeting at 7:30am, does that mean you are camping Friday and Saturday nights? Or do you plan on having camp packed up by 7:30?

Yeah, I think most of us are planning to camp Friday night. We are really dragging out a short stretch of trail, but I think part of this is just an excuse for us to all hang out Friday night around the camp fire before wheeling the following day! 🏕️ 🔥 🍻
