It’s that time again! As the year winds down, we’re gearing up for our traditional NVJA End-of-Year Ride—our chance to wrap up the season with a little cold-weather adventure and a lot of camaraderie.
This year, we’re eyeing Saturday, December 27 (instead of the usual December 31) to give everyone a weekend window before the New Year rush. Unless we hear otherwise, that’s our go date!
Ride Overview
This members-only outing will take us up to Flagpole Knob, a scenic and generally forgiving trail with a few fun features to keep things interesting. The catch? Winter conditions can turn a mild ride into a true adventure. Snow, ice, and slick spots can turn “easy” into “epic”—so come ready for anything.
Key Details
- Trail Route: Up Union Springs → Meadow Knob stop → Down Switzer Lake
- Who: NVJA Members Only (limit 10 Jeeps — possibly two groups of 5 if weather or leadership allows)
- When: Saturday, December 27
- Meet: 9:00 AM sharp at Sheetz, 798 E Market St, Harrisonburg, VA
- Wrap-up: Aim to finish before sunset (~5 PM)
Why Join?
Because there’s no better way to close out the year than with friends, fresh mountain air, and a few “remember that time…” stories. Whether it’s clear skies or a full-on snow globe up there, it’s always memorable.
What to Bring
Required Gear
- A reliable 4WD vehicle
- Winch: Minimum one per three Jeeps (please confirm when signing up)
- Full-size spare + tools to change it
- Front and rear tow points
- Shovel, tow strap, shackles, tree saver (or a second strap)
- Cold-weather essentials (plan for worst case scenario of being stuck on side of mountain in cold):
- Blanket or sleeping bag per person
- Extra socks and gloves (waterproof preferred)
- Food, water, and meds for a full day—or an unexpected overnight
- Thermal layers and warm clothing
- GMRS radio for easy comms
- Camera (the views can be spectacular and there can be some great snow memories)
- Off-road tires (in good condition)
A Few Final Notes
We’ll do our best to be off the mountain before dark, but as always, safety comes first. Be ready for changing conditions, icy surprises, and the possibility of a chilly night on the trail.
If you’re ready to close out the year with a mix of challenge, teamwork, and good stories—sign up below and let’s make this winter ride one to remember!
