End of Year Winter Ride
(aka Frozen Frontier Tour, Icebreaker Adventure, Slip & Slide, or Winchfest)

We’re gearing up for the NVJA End-of-Year Ride! Traditionally held on December 31 (a Tuesday this year), we’re considering moving it to Saturday, December 28, due to the mid-week date. Please share your preference; if we don’t hear from you, we’ll plan for 12/31.

This MEMBERS-ONLY ride takes us to Flagpole Knob, a very manageable and easier trail known for a few small fun obstacles. But trails can have varying challenges depending on weather conditions. While it’s generally not a difficult trail, icy or snowy conditions can make it far more demanding. Some years have been easy; others have tested us—but those challenges often create the best stories (it is important for winch to be connected to both terminals of your battery)!

Key Details:
  • Trail: Up Union Springs, stop at Meadow Knob, down Switzer Lake
  • Who: NVJA Members Only (up to 10 Jeeps, possibly two groups of 5 with willing leads and weather dependent)
  • When:
    • Date: 12/28 (updating to make 12/28 the date)
    • Time: Meet at 8:00 AM in Harrisonburg (early start to maximize daylight...sorry)
  • Where: Meet at Sheetz, 798 E Market St, Harrisonburg, VA
  • Why: Adventure, camaraderie, and a story-worthy end to the year!
Ride Notes:
We’ll aim to finish before sunset (~5 PM) given the short daylight hours. Safety is our top priority, so be prepared for potential challenges, including the slim possibility of spending a night on the mountain in sub-freezing weather (not expected, but be prepared).

--------------------------------------------------
Required Equipment:
  • 4WD vehicle in good working condition
  • Winch: I want to have at least one winch for every three Jeeps (please confirm when signing up)
  • Full-size spare tire and all tools needed to change it
  • Tow points (front and rear)
  • Shovel, tow strap, shackle, tree saver, or a second tow strap
Cold-weather essentials:
  • Blanket or sleeping bag for each person
  • Spare socks and a second pair of gloves (preferably waterproof)
  • Food, water, medications, and anything needed to survive a day—or night—in sub-freezing temperatures
  • Thermal wear or layers to prepare for extreme cold.
---
Recommended Equipment:
  • GMRS radio
  • Camera (this trail offers stunning views when conditions align)
  • Off-road tires are highly advised; consider bringing chains if your tires aren’t suitable for ice.
---
When you sign up:
  • Indicate whether you have a winch when signing up
This ride promises a possibility for adventure and teamwork, but it also requires flexibility and preparation. If you’re up for the challenge, sign up below and join us for an unforgettable end to the year!
